This is a lovely simple quilt block with the delightful name of Duck and Ducklings. It’s classified as a five patch and is also known as Aunt Kate’s Choice. I have made it here as a 10″ quilt block.
Cutting requirements for the duck and ducklings quilt block
nine 2.1/2″ blue squares
four 2.1/2″ white squares
six 2.7/8″ squares in both blue and white
Making the duck and ducklings quilt block
Use all the 2.7/8″ squares to make half square triangles. Place two triangles with right sides together and mark a line along the diagonal. Sew a 1/4″ seam either side of the marked line and cut along the line to produce two half square triangles.
Lay the squares out in five rows of five. Basically you have a nine patch in the centre made using the 2.1/2″ blue and white squares. There’s one blue square in the middle of each edge and the half square triangles are everywhere else.
Sew the squares together across each row and then sew the rows together to complete the duck and ducklings quilt block.
