CAKE STAND QUILT BLOCK PATTERN

There’s an enormous group of quilt blocks that are variations of baskets with different options of what you put inside the basket.  This particular version is actually called the cake stand quilt block and it is very simple and easy to piece.

Cutting requirements

one 6.7/8″ square in a dark and a light fabric

four 2.7/8″ squares each in light and dark, seven 2.1/2″ light squares

Making the cake stand quilt block

Make half square triangles

Make half square triangles

Lay the two 6.7/8″ squares with right sides together.  Mark a line along the diagonal, sew a seam 1/4″ either side of the marked line and cut along the line.  This will give you two half square triangle units.  You only need one of these, but I always prefer to make half square triangles using this method because then I don’t have to worry about the fabric stretching along the bias.  Repeat the process with the four pairs of 2.7/8″ squares.  This will give you eight 2.1/2″ half square triangle units.

Lay the 6.1/2″ half square triangle unit in the middle and add the plain squares and the 2.1/2″ half square triangles round it as shown.  Sew together the three patchwork squares that form the top and the bottom of the quilt block.  Sew these to the top and bottom of the large half square triangle unit.  Sew together the five patchwork squares for each side of the quilt block and sew these strips to the side.  This completes the cake stand quilt block.

This block would be great on its own in something like a sampler quilt, but there are all sorts of options for how you could fill the basket if you wanted to.  You could make the initial 6.1/2″ half square triangle unit using a floral fabric to make a flower basket, or you could embroider or applique a filling for the basket – flowers, fruit or cakes would all be possible options.
