This heart quilt is particularly appropriate for Valentine’s day, but can say something special at any time of the year. It is simple to make but quite eyecatching when finished. You will need 3/4 yard of background and 1 yard for the heart itself. You will also need rectangles of wadding and backing fabric about 33″ by 39″.
pink fabric: six 6.1/2″ squares, five 6.7/8″ squares, four strips 2″ wide for the quilt border
red fabric: fourteen 6.1/2″ squares and five 6.7/8″ squares, four strips 2.1/2″ wide for the quilt binding
Making the heart quilt block
It’s easiest to cut a strip across the width of the fabric at either 6.1/2″ or 6.7/8″ and then cut the strip into squares. I get six squares from each strip of fabric. The 6.7/8″ squares need to cut along one diagonal to make triangles. With right sides together sew all the pink triangles to the red triangles. This makes ten half square triangles.
Lay the squares out in five rows of six squares.
Row one: half square triangle, one red, two half square triangles, one red, one half square triangle.
Row two: six red squares
Row three: one half square triangle, four red, one half square triangle
Row four: one pink, one half square triangle, two red, one half squae triangle, one pink
Row five: two pink, two half square triangles, two pink squares.
Sew the squares together to make the heart
With right sides together and using a 1/4″ seam, sew the squares together across each row. Check that you have the half square triangles the right way round. Sew the rows together. It is worth pinning at each seam across the row when joining the rows so that you can ease the fabric as you stitch each block so that it is in line with the block above it. Nest the seam allowances so that they face in different directions where the seams join. This gives a smoother quilt top.
The Valentine heart quilt border
Cut two 2″ pink strips 36.1/22 long and sew to the top and bottom of the heart quilt. Cut two 2″ pink strips 33.1/2″ long and sew to the sides of the heart quilt.
Finishing the Valentine heart quilt
Lay the backing right side down and smooth gently. Lay the wadding on to pand smooth again. Lay the patchwork heart on top with right side up. Pin to secure the three layers together. Quilt them together. You could simply stitch along the seam lines (stitch in the ditch), or it can be a nice touch to stitch a small heart in the individual patchwork squares. Trim the excess wadding and backing fabric and bind the heart quilt.
