How do you find a gift for a man? At a time like Valentines Day you can’t give them chocolates or flowers or anything that they might consider sissy. One solution that I came up with was to make something practical – in this case a sunglasses case – bit give it a Valentine element by quilting hearts on it.
I have made this sunglasses case sort of reversible: it can be used both ways but looks slightly better one way. All that is required is a 20″ by 5″ rectangle of two fabrics, an 18″ by 5″ rectangle of wadding and a length of cord about 24″ long.
Making the sunglasses case
Place the two fabric rectangles with right sides together and place the wadding on top. Place the wadding in the middle so that there is 1″ more of fabric at both ends. Sew a seam down the two long edges to form a tube. Pull the top of the tube down to turn the tube right side out and press.
Using a fabric marker draw a heart about 2″ long and draw another heart inside it. Without lifting your marker pen draw another heart with inner heart to one side and continue drawing them down the length of the bag. Quilt along this line – it doesn’t have to be exact. I cut the edges on several hearts but they still look heart shaped.
Fold in a small hem at each end and stitch across the edges to secure them. Fold the entire rectangle in half so that you have a pouch measuring aout 10″ by 5″. Sew up the sides using a 1/4″ seam and stop sewing about 1/2″ from the top of the pouch. There is quite a thickness of fabric to sew through, but my machine coped okay with it. You may prefer to slipstitch the edges by hand.
Cut the cord in half to give two 12″ lengths and lay one length just beneath the top edge of the bag. Fold the top edge of the bag down over the cord and slipstitch in place. Repeat on the other side of the sunglasses case. Tie the ends of each pair of cord lengths so that they make a complete circle. These can be pulled to shut the top of the sunglasses case. As you can see the bag can be turned inside out although I think that I prefer it as shown in the left hand photo with the colour contrast.
