MOSAIC QUILTED TABLE RUNNER PATTERN

I always think that table runners are a great way to use up small amounts of fabric and they make great gifts.  I’ve made this table runner using a quilt block known as Mosaic which is attributed to Nancy Cabot.  Dont’s worry it it’s not the mosaic quilt block that you know – there seem to be endless numbers of quilt blocks called mosaic.

Fabric requirements

The finished size is 48″ by 12″ and to make it you will need three 3.7/8″ strips of light fabric and two each of dark and medium fabric.

Make half square triangles

Make half square triangles

Cut all the strips into 3.7/8″ squares and use these to make half square triangles.  Place two squares with right sides together and mark a line along the diagonals.  Sew a seam 1/4″ either side of the marked line and cut along the line to produce two half square triangles.

For each mosaic quilt block you will need four squares each of dark and light fabric made into half square triangle units and four squares each of medium and light fabric made into half square triangle units.

Sew the squares across the rows

Sew the squares across the rows

You need to make three mosaic  quilt blocks to make the table runner.  Lay the squares out in four rows of four with the dark triangles in the corners and around the central square.  The medium triangles form a square shape around the central square.

Sew the squares together across the rows and then sew the rows together.

Take eight of the remaining 3.7/8″ squares in medium and in dark fabric and trim them to make them 2.1/2″ squares.  Sew them together in pairs and then fours.  You need four strips of four squares.  Sew one between each mosaic quilt block and one at each end.  This completes the top of the mosaic table runner.

Finishing the mosaic quilted table runner

Layer the table runner as for a quilt – backing fabric with right side down, wadding and then patchwork top with right side up.  Pin and quilt.  I used a simple stitch in the ditch quilting.  Baste all round the edge and trim the excess backing fabric and wadding.

You will need three 2.1/2″ strips of fabric for the binding.  If you want to make the mosaic table runner longer or shorter you just need to add or remove mosaic quilt blocks.
