The Peony Forget Me Nots quilt block is one that I should have made a long time ago – it is so pretty and very simple to make. It’s classified as a four patch block and I have made it here as a 16″ square.
Cutting requirements for the peony forget me nots quilt block
2.1/2″ squares: twelve blue, twelve white, sixteen red
2.7/8″ squares: four each in pink and white, six each in red and white, two each in red and pink
Making the peony forget me nots quilt block
Use the 2.7/8″ squares to make half square triangles in the colour pairings listed above. Place two squares with right sides together and mark a line along the diagonal. Sew a 1/4″ seam either side of the marked line and cut along the line. This will produce two half square triangles which are now 2.1/2″ squares. Press the seam allowances towards the darker fabric and trim the two corners where the triangle tips stick out.
This block can best be made in four quarters as it is a symmetrical block. Lay the squares out in four rows of four as shown – except for the bottom left corner, which I have misplaced. I have included this photo because it shows the rest of the layout clearly. The correct bottom row is shown on the right – with the red forming a sort of boat shape.
Sew the squares together across each row and then sew the rows to each other to complete the block. This is one quarter of the full peony forget me nots quilt block, so you will need to make another three of them.
Lay the quarter blocks out in two rows of two. You will need to rotate the blocks in order to make the design. Make sure that the three white squares are always in the corners and that the blue squares always lie across the corners.
Sew the quarter blocks together in pairs and then sew the pairs together to complete the peony forget me nots quilt block.
