The True Lovers Knot quilt block is also known as the California Oakleaf and as the Sassafras Leaf. I think that it’s a delightful block and I have made it here as a 21″ square.
If you wanted a smaller block, you could use 2.1/2″ squares and it would then make up as a 14″ block.
This block would make a great autograph quilt – lots of white spaces for signatures.
Cutting requirements for the true lovers knot quilt block
3.1/2″ squares: sixteen blue, five white
3.1/2″ by 2″ rectangles: twenty white, twenty blue
3.1/2″ by 6.1/2″ rectangles: four white
Making the true lovers knot quilt block
It is simplest to make the block in quarters. First sew all the small rectangles together in pairs as shown on the left.
Lay the squares for one quarter out in three rows of three with a blue square in each corner, a white square in the middle and a rectangle pair in the four remaining spaces.
Sew the squares together across each row and then sew the rows to each other. Make four of these nine patch blocks.
Assembling the true lovers knot quilt block
Lay the blocks made above in the corners of the full block. Between each pair of blocks lay a 6.1/2″ white rectangle and a blue/white rectangle pair. Place a white square in the middle and make sure that the rectangle pairs are placed so that the blue lies on the edge of the white square.
Sew all the white rectangles and blue/white rectangle pairs together. Sew the blocks together across the rows – you will end up with three rows of patchwork. Sew these three rows to each other to complete the true lovers knot quilt block.
