Eddystone light quilt block

The Eddystone Light quilt block has such a lovely name!  It’s a nine patch block and I have made it here as a 12″ square.

Cutting requirements for the eddystone light quilt block

4.1/2″ squares:  one white

2.1/2″ squares:  eight yellow

2.7/8″ squares:  four each in yellow and white, eight each in blue and white

Make half square triangle units

Making the eddystone light quilt block

Make half square triangle units with the 2.7/8″ squares.  Place two squares with right sides together and mark a line along the diagonal.  Sew a seam 1/4″ either side of the marked line and cut along the line.  This produces two half square triangles which are 2.1/2″ squares.  Press the seam allowances towards the darker fabric and trim the corners where the triangle tips stick out.

The squares would be laid out in five rows of five if they were all the same size.  However, I want to show you the frames as they are built up, because I hope that will make it more simple for you to repeat.  The outer frame consists of a yellow square in each corner with another yellow square just diagonally in from the corner.  All the rest of the outer frame is made with blue/white half square triangles, placed so that the white triangles together form two larger white triangles along each edge pointing towards the edge.

The next frame in is made with the yellow squares that were already placed in the corner of this frame.  Then two yellow/white half square triangles are placed between the corners.  These are placed so that the yellow triangles together form a larger yellow triangle on each edge pointing towards the middle.

Now there just remains the space for a 4.1/2″ white square to go in the middle of the eddystone light quilt block.

Sew the squares in pairs

Sew the squares together across the rows for the top two and the bottom two rows.  For the central two rows, sew the half square triangles together to make four patch units on each side of the central square which can then be sewn to the central square.

Sew the rows to each other to complete the eddystone light quilt block.

Thanks for visiting my blog.

I hope to see you again soon.
