Wedding Rings Table Runner

The wedding rings quilt block makes a great table runner pattern.  I have used three of the blocks to make a table runner 15″ wide by 45″ long.  It is simple to sew and makes a very striking addition to any table.  I have used 1/4 yard of the gold and the black fabric, 1/2 yard of the ruby (that includes the binding) and 3/4 yards of white fabric.

Cutting requirements

3.7/8″ squares:  twelve each in gold and white, twelve each black and white

3.1/2″ squares:  fifteen white, twelve ruby

Backing fabric and wadding:  one rectangle about 17″ by 47″ of each

For the binding you will need three 2.1/2″ strips of the ruby fabric

Use the 3.7/8″ squares to make half square triangle units in gold and white as well as black and white.  Place two squares with right sides together and mark a line along the diagonal.  Sew a 1/4″ seam either side of the marked line and cut along the line.  This will give you two half square triangle units which are now 3.1/2″ squares.  Press the seam allowance towards the dark fabric and trim the corners of the squares.

Make the wedding rings quilt block

Lay the patchwork squares out in five rows of five.  There’s a white square in the middle of each edge and also in the middle of the quilt block itself.  Place one ruby square on each edge of the central square.  There’s a gold/white half square triangle in each corner with the white triangle on the outside and another one diagonally in from each corner placed between the ruby squares to give that ring shape in the middle of the block.  Place a black/white half square triangle either side of each corner, placed so that they form a line with the gold triangle.

Sew the squares across each row

Sew the squares together across each row and then sew the rows to each other.  Make three of these blocks and sew them together in a row to make one rectangle 15.1/2″ wide by 45.1/2″ long.

Finishing the wedding rings table runner

Lay the backing fabric with right side down.  Smooth gently and lay the wadding on top of it.  Smooth gently again and lay the patchwork down with right side up.

Pin to secure the three layers, quilt to hold them together and bind as for any quilt.

I have used colours to remind me of precious stones for the wedding rings table runner, but of course you could make it any colours to suit any occasion.

I have made up a few kits of this table runner – to include the printed pattern, all fabrics and wadding needed to make it.  Click here for details.
