The follow the leader quilt block will certainly be my last quilt block pattern this year. One of my tasks for the next few weeks is to organise my quilt block patterns into some sort of order to make it more easy for you to find a particular block.
This particular one is another quilt block with a name that took my fancy. I think that I would like to make it another time with more colours – it would make a great scrappy quilt block. I have made it here with just two colours and white as an 18″ block.
Cutting requirements for follow the leader quilt block
3.1/2″ squares: four white, twelve pink, twelve brown
3.7/8″ squares: two each in brown and white, two each in brown and pink
Making the follow the leader quilt block
Use all the 3.7/8″ squares to make half square triangles. Place a brown square with either a pink or white square with right sides together. Mark a line along the diagonal and sew a seam 1/4″ either side of the marked line. Cut along the line to produce two half square triangle units. Press the seam allowance towards the brown and trim the corners.
Lay the patchwork squares out in six rows of six. The white squares are in the corners, with a pink square and a pin/brown half square triangle on either side of them. The brown/white half square triangles form a pinwheel in the centre of the block and the rest of the block is made up with either pink or brown squares.
On the left you can see the first three rows of the follow the leader quilt block and the bottom three rows are shown on the right. Sew the squares together across each row and then sew the rows to each other to complete the follow the leader quilt block.
Thanks for visiting my blog.
I hope to see you again soon.
